What is SEM?

Search Engine Marketing, or SEM for short, is paid search that uses tailored advertising to increase your chances of getting found on Google and other search sites.

Benefits of search engine marketing:

  • Get noticed online
  • Promote your website and business offering
  • Reach wide audiences
  • Stand out from your competitors
  • Measure results easily

Techniques you can give a go:

1. With Pay Per Click (PPC) advertising, you only pay each time your ad is clicked on. You link the ad to your website or a landing page and gain conversions (sales) through the visitors directed to your site from the ad. You can also set up a cost per click (CPM) system where you pay per a thousand impressions.

2. Get noticed on Search Engine Results Pages (SERPs) by putting some of your marketing spend behind SEM tools like Google Ads. Do your research on what keywords can get you noticed online. Dig deeper into keywords and use the Google Keywords Planner, or team up with a digital expert to assist in identifying the most popular and relevant keywords for your business’ web-based marketing efforts. Keywords, when used correctly, help generate leads to your website and ultimately result in a sale.

3. Backlinks, or sites that link to your website, help attract more visitors and add credibility. Look for websites that you’d like to feature on and offer to write an insightful article or blog post for them to publish with a link back to your website. By doing this, you'll have your content appear in more places that one, and you're providing multiple opportunities for your content to show up in search engine searches. You could ideally achieve this for free, but you might have to pay for backlinks or your content to appear as ‘native advertising’ or ‘sponsored content’ on websites.
